Statistics About Drugs in Sport

After each and every year, new athletes were born while the old ones need to push themselves more so that the young generation of athletes would not beat them during the competition.

But no matter what generation an athlete belongs to, sport drugs are widely used by the athletes all over the world. As a result the growth of the number of athletes using drugs is rapidly increasing, year after year.

A survey and drug testing was done in East Germany last year among the professional as well as amateur German athletes. According to the statistics, the number of athletes using prohibited sport drugs remained constant since 2004.

From the annual report that was given by the Federal Institute of Sports Sciences located in Bonn, there were as much as 8,000 German athletes but only 56 athletes were proven to be using the illegal sport drugs. According to the same report, the figures became a plateau as the results became consistent. In 2006, there were at least 7,900 athletes in Germany who have undergone the drug test but only 40 athletes were using sport drugs. And as for 2005, there were at least 9,000 athletes who had the test but only 60 were proven to be positive.

But of course, sport drugs or the topic of doping among sports men (and sometimes even women) is not just in Germany alone. There are also drug tests done in United Kingdom. And just like in Germany, it also gave wonderful results as well.

In 2007, UK Sport conducted a drug test program among its 7, 082 athletes. This includes the athletes playing football, basketball, wrestling, body building, professional boxing and more. When the results were released, it revealed that only 44 athletes are using prohibited drugs. The 44 athletes include 5 rugby players, 1 athlete in shooting, 14 players in rugby league, 1 athlete in power lifting, 1 motorcycle rider, 1 lawn tennis players, 1 athlete in judo, 1 player of ice hockey, 6 football players, 2 athletes in fencing, and 2 basketball players. There are even two disabled athletes who failed the drug test conducted by the UK sports.

But although the results turned out to be quite good enough in Germany and in United Kingdom, the recent statistics and surveys conducted for 2008 revealed that the use of sport drugs among athletes all over the world is still a huge problem. What’s worse is that the problem is still rapidly increasing especially to the athletes in college. Although these athletes know that their health is at a great risk, they are still kept on experimenting at a very young age the various substances that they can take just to achieve the medal that they want in the competition.

According to the latest statistics from World Anti-Doping Agency, as early as high school, athletes are now taking anabolic steroids to enhance their performance. More often than not, high school athletes were using anabolic steroids to help them cope up with the pressure in order to perform better for their parent’s satisfaction, for their coaches, and for the scouts who are always on the look out for a new breed of athletes.

As of the moment, what the real athletes are worried about is the upcoming Olympics along with the era of drug for athlete, also known as the gene doping. With the gene doping currently existing in the sports industry, it is likely that the statistics of drug in sports would increase by as much as 30 percent.
